Tokyo Proposal and Engagement Photos in Japan | Michael + Briyana
Ushijima Shrine, Asakusa, Shibuya Crossing + Mount Fuji
Tokyo, Japan

Michael and Briyana’s Tokyo proposal and engagement session was one of the most unforgettable destination stories I have ever photographed. Their experience began with a surprise proposal at Ushijima Shrine in Tokyo, Japan, and continued through the lantern-lit streets of Asakusa, the nonstop energy of Shibuya Crossing, and the breathtaking landscape surrounding Mount Fuji.
Michael is a good friend of mine, so when he told me he planned to propose to Briyana in Tokyo on October 29, 2025, I knew I wanted to help him create something truly special. My wife Melissa and I traveled from California to Japan so I could photograph the proposal while she captured complementary video coverage.
The result was much more than a proposal session. It became a multi-location Tokyo engagement experience filled with romance, editorial portraits, playful moments, and some of Japan’s most recognizable scenery.
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Tokyo
We arrived in Tokyo the afternoon before the proposal and used that time to scout the location, study the available light, and finalize the setup.
Michael wanted the proposal to feel private, thoughtful, and romantic. We selected a quiet area near Ushijima Shrine, with water, greenery, and a stone pathway that gave us a beautiful setting without taking attention away from the moment itself.
Before Michael and Briyana arrived, Melissa and I prepared a picnic-style setup with a blanket, basket, a handwritten letter Michael had mailed to me in advance, and the exact bottle of tequila he requested.
To keep the surprise intact, we even arrived wearing disguises so Briyana would not recognize us while approaching the proposal location.
A Romantic Proposal at Ushijima Shrine
As Michael and Briyana walked along the path, she noticed the setup waiting for them. Michael handed her the letter, shared what was on his heart, and asked her to marry him.
She said yes.
Once the surprise had fully landed, Melissa and I revealed ourselves and began photographing their first portraits as an engaged couple.
The soft light, calm water, natural greenery, and traditional surroundings made the area near Ushijima Shrine an incredible location for romantic Tokyo engagement photos. The setting felt peaceful and timeless, creating a beautiful contrast to the busy city locations we photographed later.
Engagement Photos in Asakusa and Senso-ji
After leaving Ushijima Shrine, we traveled to Asakusa for a completely different visual atmosphere.
The temple architecture, lanterns, gates, and surrounding streets near Senso-ji gave the photos a dramatic and cinematic quality. These images felt richer and more atmospheric than the softer proposal portraits, allowing us to create variety while still keeping the full session cohesive.
Asakusa is such an incredible area for couples who want their Tokyo engagement photos to feature traditional Japanese architecture alongside the energy of the modern city.
Editorial Engagement Photos at Shibuya Crossing
That evening, we headed to Shibuya Crossing for bold, editorial-style engagement portraits.
For the nighttime images, Melissa held an off-camera flash above Michael and Briyana while they stepped into the crossing during the pedestrian signal. Using flash allowed me to keep the couple sharp and illuminated while the signs, headlights, and crowds created layers of movement behind them.
The finished images feel part fashion editorial, part movie still, and part album cover.
We returned to Shibuya during the daytime as well, giving their gallery both nighttime drama and daytime city context. Together, the images show two completely different sides of one of Tokyo’s most famous neighborhoods.
Mount Fuji Engagement Photos
The following day, we took a train toward Mount Fuji and worked with a local driver who helped us reach some of the clearest viewpoints.
Rather than creating only formal portraits, I encouraged Michael and Briyana to move naturally through the landscape. They walked, ran, spun, laughed, and gave each other piggyback rides through the tall grass while Mount Fuji rose behind them.
These playful images became the perfect ending to the session. After the elegance of Ushijima Shrine, the drama of Asakusa, and the editorial energy of Shibuya, the Mount Fuji portraits felt open, relaxed, and joyful.
Four Locations and Four Distinctive Styles
One of the best parts of this destination engagement session was how each location brought a different feeling to the gallery:
Ushijima Shrine offered romantic, peaceful, and timeless proposal photos.
Asakusa and Senso-ji gave us dramatic portraits surrounded by traditional Japanese architecture.
Shibuya Crossing created modern, editorial images filled with light, movement, and city energy.
Mount Fuji gave us playful, natural engagement photos surrounded by sweeping scenery.
Together, the locations created a complete visual story rather than a traditional engagement session confined to one setting.
Destination Engagement Photography in Japan
Photographing Michael and Briyana’s proposal was a reminder of why I love destination photography. A meaningful location can become part of the couple’s story, not simply a backdrop.
For couples planning a Tokyo proposal, Japan engagement session, or destination elopement, I help with location scouting, lighting plans, timeline guidance, and the logistical details needed to create beautiful photographs in an unfamiliar city.
I am based in Camarillo, California, and photograph weddings, proposals, and engagement sessions throughout California and worldwide. For qualifying four-hour engagement photography and videography bookings, travel and lodging are included.
Michael and Briyana, thank you for trusting Melissa and me to travel across the world and document such an unforgettable chapter of your love story.
